Song of the Week #35: John Wesley "The King of 17"
Click the image below to head to Wes' myspace page - click on track #4 "The King of 17."

This is what I said of this track in my best of the year re-cap when it came out:

It's a great rock album and if you're looking for a modern day Springsteen with a darker tone and more personal lyrics, then this is an album worth checking out. This may be going a bit far, but I don't think so - I think in many ways, he is a new Springsteen with a louder PRS, check out these lines from "King of 17": "We head to the east to catch up to the sun / You smile as you watch it rise / We come from nothing, we leave nothing behind / My world is the hope in your eyes."

Beginning with a hypnotic guitar intro Wes starts to weave a story of escapism. See lyrics below.

I first heard Wes in 1992 opening for one of my other favorite bands and he really didn't do anything for me – I was too excited for the headliner. But then I picked up his album when it came out and fell in love with the passion and intensity he brought to the songs. His first album, Under the Red & White Sky, is a perfect example of the "open up your chest, rip out your heart and put it on a record." The next time I saw him live I was mesmerized and then had the opportunity to get in-depth with him during a phone interview back in the early nineties for my college radio station & newspaper. Always willing to take time at a show to say hello and chat for a couple, he’s one of the nicest people I've met in the business and that translates to the music – personal, honest, gripping, and extremely real. I could go on for paragraphs on what he’s done for fans and the experiences at what used to be an annual celebration of his music, Wesfest, etc.

He spends a good part of his time now as the touring guitarist for Porcupine Tree as well as working with them in the studio. He has an emotionally charged video on the page above for his song "Thanksgiving Day" about a Military friend who went overseas.

The King of 17

Your mama and daddy can't take care of themselves
So I'm gonna look after you
Your daddy loves liquor and your mama needs help
'cause all of her nightmares came true

I got this car when my granddad passed
So meet me just after last bell
I've got twenty dollars it'll get us some gas
We won't get to far, we won't get there fast
But it's twenty dollars further from hell

Leave it to me 'cause i'm 17
Leave it to me, we'll get through
If' you'll be my queen then I'll play a king
And I'll always look after you

Just leave it to me
I am a king at 17
Leave it to me...
I am the king of 17

We head to the east to catch up to the sun
You smile as you watch it rise
We come from nothing, we leave nothing behind
My world is the hope in your eyes

Leave it to me 'cause I’m 17
Leave it to me, we'll get through
If' you'll be my queen and I'll play your king
I'll always take care of you

Just leave it to me
I am a king at 17
Leave it to me...
I am the king of 17
