Song of the Week #42: Lenka "Trouble is a Friend"

Never in a million years would I have imagined this one. I spun Lenka's CD after receiving it late last year from the kind folks at Sony, and I tried to like it, I really did – I spun it about 8 times, well more than I wanted to, but I really tried to like it. Her voice just grated on my ears, which is strange as I love female voices. I brought the disc back out since she was opening for Missy Higgins & Justin Nozuka (a dream double bill for me) a couple weeks ago. I wanted to see if maybe I just wasn't in the mood back then, but alas no, it was still too much. But it was nice because going into the show I knew most of the songs she performed.

Jake and I were hanging with Justin for a bit underneath the stage and Lenka was soundchecking above and she was doing this number…it was definitely catchy and her voice didn't grate. I missed the first part of her set as I was meeting Missy and when I got back into the venue proper Lenka was on doing "Trouble is a Friend" and wow, it was infectious! Her band was quite impressive as well.

"I won't let him win, but I'm a sucker for his charm" – that line directly relates to Lenka and my relationship now.

I'd be lying if I told you I've listened to this less than 30 times in the past 8 days. The vocal melody in the chorus, the pulsing keyboard, the Aussie accent, the horns (mixed way too low IMHO), the pure-joyous-pop sheen, it's just purely infectious. Once the backing vocals kick in around 2:42 you're so drawn in that you don't mind that the level of cheese just made you feel like you're in Wisconsin. What did they used to say about Pringles, once you pop you can't stop? How many times in one song can you sing "oh oh" – I mean really? But it works! Everything about this song goes against my music moral fiber (lol), but it's so damn catchy and hooky that it's bored itself into my skull and I can't get it out! The song is sooooo close to being cheesier than a pizza parlor, but it just works and I can’t stop spinning it! It's opened up the rest of the album for me as well.

Trouble is A Friend
Trouble he will find you, no matter where you go, oh oh
No matter if you're fast, no matter if you're slow, oh oh
The eye of the storm or the cry in the morn, oh oh
You're fine for a while but you start to lose control...

He's there in the dark
He's there in my heart
He waits in the wings
He's gotta play a part
Trouble is a friend yeah trouble is a friend of mine
Ah ooh...

Trouble is a friend but trouble is a foe, oh oh
And no matter what I feed him he always seems to grow, oh oh
He sees what I see and he knows what I know, oh oh
So don't forget as you ease on down the road...

He's there in the dark
He's there in my heart
He waits in the wings
He's gotta play a part
Trouble is a friend yeah trouble is a friend of mine
oh oh

So don't be alarmed if he takes you by the arm
I won't let him win but I’m a sucker for his charm
Trouble is a friend yeah trouble is a friend of mine

ah ooh

How I hate the way he makes me feel
And how I try to make him leave,
I try, oh oh I try.....
