Bp's Song of the Week #129: Within Temptation "Ice Queen" (live)
It was about seven years ago now that my good friend Chris gave me a sample of a symphonic metal band from Holland with a singer that sounded like a rockin’ version of Kate Bush. It had all the right components: melodic hard rock/metal, an insanely strong female vocalist, and fair amount of symphonic bombast. It didn’t take me long to fall for Sharon den Adel and Within Temptation.

A few albums down the line now, their latest release focuses more on rock and less on symphonic bombast, but the melodic and energetic arrangements are still there and just as powerful. The Unforgiving will definitely be near the top of my Musical Picks of 2011. Last Friday night, I finally got to see them live for the first time. What made it even better was it was with Chris. The band was awesome – locked in with each other, very tight, looked like they were enjoying themselves, and they put on a fiery performance. Sharon was struggling a little bit after coming down with a cold a couple nights prior in Toronto. When she came out after the show she had a sign that said she would sign items, but had lost her voice and wouldn’t be talking. The crowd was really into the show and you would never have known they tossed in 6 songs from the new album as there were as many crowd vocalists during those cuts as there were during the perennial WT concert staples.

Within Temptation “Ice Queen” (live)

This week’s pick was filmed from the front row a couple nights after the Worcester show, in Philadelphia. Sharon was still suffering from the cold and she is visibly struggling at times, but she still sounds fantastic. The quiet and mesmerizing section at the 2:10 mark features Sharon at her finest vocally, sliding from the powerful chorus into a beautifully haunting bridge before the thundering (or raging if we’re following the lyrics) tom pattern comes in behind her, and then crashing back into the pogo-stick inducing melody. I won’t dig too deep on this one, just relax, turn it up, enjoy, and beware the ice queen –she’s not a friendly lady. (lyrics below the ‘more’ links)

Ice Queen
When leaves have fallen and skies turned to grey
The night keeps on closing in on the day
A nightingale sings his song of farewell
You'd better hide from her freezing hell

On cold wings she's coming
You'd better keep moving
For warmth, you'll be longing
Any day
Come on, just feel it?
Don't you see it?
You'd better believe

When she embraces
Your heart turns to stone
She comes at night when you're all alone
And when she whispers
Your blood shall run cold
You'd better hide before she finds you

Whenever she is raging
She takes a life away
Haven't you seen
Haven't you seen
The ruins of her world

She covers the Earth with a breathtaking cloak
The sun awakes and melts it away
The world now opens its eyes and sees
The dawning of a new day

On cold wings she's coming
You'd better keep moving
For warmth, you'll be longing
Any day
Come on you feel it
Don't you see it
You'd better believe

Whenever she is raging
She takes life away
Haven't you seen
Haven't you seen
The ruins of her world
