Song of the Week #33: Brooke Fraser "Shadowfeet"

Someone told me that I’d like Brooke, and then I saw her name on an Anna Nalick message board, and when I finally got around to spinning the disc it was interesting. I liked moments of songs…it took a few listens really, but there were some really nice things she did vocally and melodically. One of the vocal moments that stuck out on this was at 1:29 on the lyric “true reality” and then on the bridge “you make all things new” section. Her tone fits the piano like a glove and there’s a real special quality to her voice. It’s a great pop song with a super catchy chorus, but with a solid lyric. She’s from New Zealand, but she doesn’t have a discernible accent when singing, and this is on her 2006 release from NZ, but didn’t see the light of day in the U.S. until this summer.

The video I found off-putting at first – we’ve seen this concept before – but after I watched it a second time it enhanced the song a bit and now I think the people make it – from the guy who has trouble looking at the camera, to the woman with one bare shoulder who radiates beauty, to the shy, and the extroverted, the hair-players, the hoodie-head-bobber, the young girl, the Kevin Nealon/Matt Lauer lookalike, etc. Some really lovely eyes and expressive faces. But it all comes together with a great voice and a great melody.

Shadowfeet

Walking, stumbling
On these shadow feet
Toward home, a land that I’ve never seen
I am changing
Less and less asleep
Made of different stuff than when I began
And I have sensed it all along
Now fast approaching is the day

When the world has fallen out from under me
I’ll be found in you, still standing
When the sky rolls up and mountains fall on their knees
When time and space are through
I’ll be found in you

There’s distraction
Buzzing in my head
Saying in the shadows it’s easier to stay
But I’ve heard rumours of true reality
Whispers of a well-lit way

You make all things new

When the world has fallen out from under me
I’ll be found in you, still standing
Every fear and accusation under my feet
When time and space are through
I’ll be found in you
When time and space are through
I’ll be found in you
When time and space are through
I’ll be found in you
