Song of the Week #56: Def Leppard "Bringin' on the Heartbreak" (live 1988)
Even if you know the song, listen/watch this performance – it’s brilliant and totally different than the studio version you’re used to!

Def Leppard – Bringin’ on the Heartbreak (live 1988 Denver, CO)

This one has been kicking around waiting to be sent since I saw them on July 4th weekend…another brilliant Leppard show and Joe Elliott sounded better than he ever has (and usually it’s pretty rough, but not that night!). The intro dual guitar lines give me chills every time I hear it. I’ve seen and heard a number of different arrangements of this over the years live, but none top this amazing version from the 1988 Hysteria Tour. Plus it has Steve Clark.

When it transitions to electric on the “NOOOO” as the lasers erupt from under the stage, the lights come back up, Joe screams and the band lights the place up – well, the you tube version doesn’t do it justice, but on a surround system and cranked really really loud – it’s one of the best concert film moments I’ve ever seen. The youtube clip is compressed and there is no volume jump, but on a real system it will blow you away.

Phil’s guitar run in the intro
Dropped octave for chorus – sounds killer
“No, No, Nooooooo” – one of the coolest moments in music caught on video that I’ve seen
Two thumbs down for Wayne Isham for not focusing on Steve during the after break solo.
Joe’s “…heartbreaaaaaaaaaaaakkkkkkkkkkkkkkk”
Phil’s Bela Legosi Jackson guitar
Multiple Steve Clark twirls (it’s a wonder no one was clubbed by a headstock)
